Based on the experience of past AFL Grand Final nights, and Grand Final nights of other football codes around Australia and the world, we can expect a spike in police reporting, hospital admissions and in women accessing crisis services or accessing refuge or support on Saturday night. Recent data shows that on State of Origin nights, domestic assaults jumped by 40 per cent on average and non-domestic assaults increased by about 70 per cent; and this year's World Cup saw a 37.5% rise in admission rates across 15 accident and emergency departments on England match days; and similar studies reveal similar stats.
