  • Protect your computer with a strong password
  • ALWAYS log off or lock the screen even if you are leaving your computer even if only for a few minutes
  • Delete your internet history to prevent others from discovering your internet activities
  • Use a safe computer say in a public library, at a friend's house or at your workplace rather than your own computer to which your abuser may have access to either directly or indirectly
  • Make sure you disable location identification capabilities in any camera apps on your devices - click here to see how to do that
  • Recognise that social networking sites are not secure and can be a way for an abuser to find out information about you
  • Consider deleting all online accounts and create new anonymous ones - ebay, paypal, etc
Be careful when using public computers:
Computers at internet cafés, libraries, airports and hotels are convenient but because so many people use them, they are more likely to be infected with malicious software than other computers.

To be safe, ASSUME public computers are compromised with malware that can track anything you do online, including capturing any passwords you type in or any content you view online.

Follow these steps when using public computers:
  • Do NOT log onto secure sites or make online purchases as your details may be intercepted
  • Do NOT allow the browser to save your username and password. ALWAYS make sure that you turn off that option when logging into your email account and other websites
  • ALWAYS log out when leaving a website
  • MAKE SURE no-one is watching you, or 'shoulder-surfing'
  • ALWAYS log out if you leave the computer even if it is just for a moment.
  • DELETE your browsing history before you log out of the computer.
Go to the tools menu of the browser and select options or internet options.
  • MAKE SURE that the browser has any auto complete function turned off, delete any cookies, and clear the history.
  • Do NOT type in sensitive information — keystroke loggers can capture your password, credit card number and bank details as you enter them
  • AVOID making any financial transactions on public computers that could reveal sensitive information
  • AVOID using your USB memory stick on public computers as it might pick up malicious software and spread it to other computers including your computer at home.
If you must to use your memory stick, scan it with your anti-virus program before you use it again
Perhaps also consider:
  • Deactivating your accounts
    - you can always reactivate them later when it is safe to do so
  • Creating new accounts in a false name with a generic photo and only tell your closest friends
  • Explain to your friends and family that you are at risk and ask them to set their privacy settings to 'friends only'
  • Ask your friends to not to accept friend requests from people they don't know.
  • Request that your friends to NOT post information or photos about you or your children online
  • Remind your friends to NEVER give out your phone number, address, email or other social media addresses
